Check attic airflow before you add insulation
Attic insulation should leave a clear airflow path at the eaves. Material pushed into that space can trap moisture in the roof. Before adding insulation, ask the surveyor to check the eaves, existing vents and any visible signs of damp. New depth and clear airflow need to be planned together. Mention staining, damp patches or a musty smell early so they can be inspected in person.
What a good survey checks at the eaves
The surveyor should check whether soffit or eaves vents are clear and whether old insulation has been pushed into the airflow path. They should also look for wet staining on the rafters or roof felt. SEAI guidance calls for a continuous gap of at least 10mm at the eaves. This rises to 25mm where insulation would otherwise narrow the opening.
